Historically, floorcloths or painted canvas rugs were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and colonial America where they were used in almost every room of the house. They evolved from handcrafts of the 1700's into a large and thriving manufacturing industry in England in the late 1800's. Today's resurgence in popularity of floorcloths began about 30 years ago with the rebirth of the handcrafts movement.
Using traditional techniques, contemporary designs, modern paints and finishes, my floorcloths, tablerunners, and placemats are made by applying layered coats of primer and paint on heavy-weight, cotton canvas or industrial felt. Designs feature various faux painting techniques such as sponging, combing, stamping and collaging. They are finished with several coats of polyacrylic varnish and are backed with rubber latex to prevent slipping.
All pieces are easily cleaned by using a damp sponge or mop and wiped dry. Strong, durable, lightweight, and fade-resistant, floorcloths are also impervious to damage by insects or mildew.
